We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.
- Romans 6:4-5
There’s nothing I love getting to see more at our church (or any church, really) than someone getting baptized. You’re celebrating someone who was once lost and far from God being found again. You’re watching someone right before your eyes make the decision that from this point forward, their life is going to be all about Jesus and following him. That’s really exciting. Personally, I get a chance to watch from a bit of a different angle than most as I’m either in the pool or right next to it, getting a front row seat to the action!
Maybe you are wondering if this is the right next step for you. I make it no secret: I want every single person who walks through the doors of Suncrest to make this decision. I really believe it’s that huge. I’ve seen my baptism decision make a monumental impact in my own life.
The decision to be baptized necessitates three things. For one, it involves faith. We need to place our faith in Jesus Christ as the Savior and the Lord of our lives. We believe that we are saved by his grace alone and not by anything we do (Savior), but understand that Jesus is the also Son of God. He is the Lord of our lives and deserves our obedience as such. Baptism also involves repentance. This means that we are examining our lives and choosing to turn and do a 180-degree turn from anything that isn’t honoring to God. Baptism requires a confession of our faith; we will publicly acknowledge that we believe Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. This is important because we are inviting support and accountability into our lives from the church as we make this decision. Then lastly, we baptize. This is a symbol of Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection that we participate in and remember each time we celebrate baptism together.
